History of Footbag

Footbag is actually an ancient sport, with its roots in North America and Asia. There is evidence of a game that native North Americans played using a sack made of animal hyde, filled with pellets or sand. Feathers were sometimes attached to give it a flight similar to a badminton birdie.

In Malaysia in the 1960s a competitive net game called Sepaktakraw developed, using a 5" tightly woven, wicker-type ball called a Takraw Ball. A simple comparison would say that it's like volleyball using only your feet. The sport is rapidly growing in Asia, and organizers have their eyes on the potential for future Olympic presence.

In 1972, two American athletes named Mike Marshall and John Stalberger met in Oregon City, Oregon. Marshall had a home-made bean bag, that he was kicking around, and experimenting with it's potential as a co-ordination builder. Stalberger was recovering from knee surgery and was looking for a fun form of therapy and exercise. They referred to the new game as "Hacking the Sack." The two decided to collaborate and market their new game under the trademark of "Hacky Sack®".

Mike Marshall died of a heart attack in 1975, at the age of twenty eight. Stalberger continued with the vision of Hacky Sack as a popular game and formed the National Hacky Sack Association. He later sold the rights for the Hacky Sack® Footbag to Kransco (operating under the Wham-o label), which also manufactured the Frisbee and the Hula-Hoop.

By the 1980s, different varieties of the sport had evolved including "Footbag Net" where players volley a footbag over a 5-foot-high net, "Freestyle Footbag" where players stand in a circle and do tricks with the Bag while passing it around the circle, and "Footbag Golf".
